This cozy mountain retreat was designed for a Los Angeles client with a very busy lifestyle. She needed a place to get away from the city that was both private and good for entertaining her own clients in an elegant but casual environment.
The cabin originally had a lot of tounge-in-groove paneling, making the small space close and oppressive. Some of the wood was replaced with drywall, but enough remains to give the rooms a rustic, woodsy feel..

Centering on special pieces of furniture and accessories, like the red Tibetian chest (left) that replaced the counter dividing the kitchen and the living room, the open plan livingroom, kitchen, dining area were transformed into an intimate and elegant retreat.

Colorado river rock faces the fireplace, adding a contrasting texture to the knotty pine woodwork on some of the walls and the ceiling.

Strong colors on the drywalled areas help to frame the other textures and the provide a rich backdrop for the beautiful, unique furniture and acessories. Combining rich upholstry fabrics, and colorful, textured accessories offers contrast within an overall unity. The addition of delicate, shimmering throw pillows on the sofa anf beside the fireplace add sophistication to the rustic environment.
Kitchen Details
The kitchen features a lovely gray and white granite countertop and backsplash, as well as a deep, porcelain farm sink. The undercounter refrigerator is one that is normally found in stadium box seats; it was chosen to reduce the central, visual role the refrigerator would play in this room if it were taller. Additional cold food storage is situated in the under-house basement.
Bedrooms
The bedrooms in the cabin were tiny but the large, sophisticated furnishings make the room cozy rather than crowded. The sliding door is clear glass and leads to the outside deck.

The details like an heirloom lamp and a carved wooden armchair are just the right finishes to the simplicity of the overall design.

The guest bedroom is simple and charming with a fluffy down comforter and warm lighting. The addition of pillows made from vintage fabrics adds a quirky, personal touch to the quiet chic of the room.
Jack & Jill Bathroom A tiny Jack & Jill bathroom was made roomier with pocket doors, skylights, and creamy light slate tile. The simple hardware accentuates the sumptuousness of the slate.
Whether it's wine and cheese and a mountain sunset for her clients or an afternoon summer read, the deck provides the owner a sense of serenity and focus as she enjoys her mountain retreat.
